The Australian Sugar Heritage Centre

Australian Sugar Industry Museum Inc.

The existing southern building housed the Sugarama Theatre. The Sugarama Theatre was named by the Vandeleur Family through an open suggestion competition. It was officially opened by MLA Mr Peter Byrne on August 25th 1956. It closed on December 21st 1972.  The final movie screened was “Trinity”.

On April 17th 1974, funds were made available by the State Government, the Johnstone Shire Council to purchase the building and property to establish the Regional Information Centre.

On 5th July, 1974 the building was purchased.  It also became the first location of the Australian Sugar Industry Museum, established by Cr Roy Dickson and Mr Greg Campagnola.

The Australian Sugar Industry Museum was Incorporated on 2nd May 1984, and the Museum was established on 19th September 1984.

CANEGROWERS Innisfail took over management of the complex on 28th September 2009 and work closely with the Australian Sugar Industry Museum Management Committee, to keep the complex running.

Conference Room for Hire

The current Conference Room is available for business meetings or business and private functions. The room has internet, projector, sound system, screen set up, fully air conditioned and has washroom facilities. $45 per hour (+GST) for first hour and the rate decreases the longer the room hire is, if it’s hired for more than 7 hours it is charged at a daily rate of $280 (+GST) please phone the office on (07) 40632477 to get a quote. The café is next door and they can cater for any meeting or function held, they can be contacted on (07) 40632233. The Conference Room can hold approximately 80 people seated.

Cassowary Coast Region Art Gallery Hire

The Gallery has been renamed “Cassowary Coast Region Art Gallery” and it can be hired separately or in conjunction with the conference room. The Gallery is a wonderful art space ideal for holding art displays or competitions, which can be utilised by any artist, which is a real asset for local arts. We have also hired the space out to private parties and a wedding reception, there is a kitchen adjoined to the gallery which is available to hire in conjunction with hiring the Gallery. The Gallery starts at $25 per hour for 4 hours and the rate decreases after that, decreasing the longer the room hire is for. The Gallery can hold up to 100 people. Mourilyan Café

The Mourilyan Café has a wide range of fresh and delicious hot and cold food. After your visit to the Museum come into the air-conditioned comfort of the Mourilyan Café and have a refreshing tea, coffee, and cake.

The Rattlin Loco Gift Shop

The Museum has its own gift shop selling local products, souvenirs, plush cassowaries, DVDs and books that relate to the sugar industry.

This gift shop is in the reception area and is open during Museum opening hours.

There is also Tourist Information available for our local region.
